Our Story

A Place Set Apart

Stillwater Retreat was founded in 1987 by a small community of contemplatives seeking to share the gift of silence with a noisy world. What began as a single farmhouse has grown into an 80-acre sanctuary.

We are rooted in the Christian contemplative tradition while welcoming seekers of all backgrounds. Our approach is ecumenical, drawing wisdom from Benedictine, Ignatian, and Celtic streams.

Whether you come for an hour or a week, our prayer is that you would encounter the God who waits for you in the stillness.

Contemplative Practices

These time-tested practices create space for encounter with God. During your retreat, you'll be introduced to practices suited to your spiritual journey.

20 minutes

Lectio Divina

Sacred reading of Scripture—a slow, contemplative approach to engaging with the Word that invites transformation.

30-45 minutes

Walking Meditation

Mindful walking through our grounds, bringing awareness to each step as a form of moving prayer.

15-30 minutes

Labyrinth Walk

An ancient practice of walking a winding path as a metaphor for the spiritual journey—releasing, receiving, returning.

20-40 minutes

Examen

A daily review of consciousness, noticing where God was present and where we may have missed the invitation.

15 minutes

Silent Sitting

Simply being present in silence, without agenda, allowing God to work in the depths of our being.
